1. The shaft material is mainly carbon steel and alloy steel.

The commonly used carbon steel is 45 steel, which should generally be normalized or quenched and tempered to improve its mechanical properties. Alloy steel has higher mechanical properties and heat treatment properties than carbon steel, but it is more sensitive to stress concentration and more expensive, so it is mostly used in occasions with high speed, heavy load and special conditions such as wear resistance, high temperature resistance or low temperature. . Since the elastic modulus difference between alloy steel and carbon steel is very small at room temperature, replacing carbon steel with alloy steel cannot significantly improve the stiffness of the shaft.

2. Alloy steel can be used for shafts that bear large loads, require high strength, compact structure or have good wear resistance.

Commonly used are 40Cr, 20Cr, 35SiMn and so on. It should be pointed out that when the dimensions are the same, the use of alloy steel cannot improve the stiffness of the shaft, because in general, the elastic modulus of various steels is similar; alloy steel is more sensitive to stress concentration, so the structural design of the shaft is more important. Pay attention to reducing the influence of stress concentration; when using alloy steel, corresponding heat treatment must be carried out in order to better exert the performance of the material.

3. The blank of the shaft is generally hot-rolled round steel or forging.

For shafts with complex shapes (such as crankshafts and camshafts, etc.), cast steel or ductile iron can also be used. The latter has the advantages of good vibration absorption, low sensitivity to stress concentration and low price.
